Today, Dec. 17th, Dark Knight fans are mailing joker cards to Variety!
by Blair on Dec.16, 2008, under NEWS
A bunch of folks in our community have decided to spread the word by sending some Joker cards to one of the mainstream and widely read film media sites Variety. Help TDK get more Oscar publicity and show your fan support. Let the movie industry know we’re out there! Today… Dec. 17th we are sending Joker cards in the mail to Variety.

Here is the scoop from the folks in our community who came up with this plan:
It is simple;
1. find a deck of cards
2. remove the joker card
3. with a red pen, somewhere on the card write:“Why So Serious?”
For Your Consideration
The Dark Knight
DarkCampaign.com4. mail it to:
Variety Magazine
5900 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 3100
Los Angeles, CA 90036***** DO THIS ON DEC 17th *****
***** DO THIS ON DEC 17th *****
It’s all part of the plan. And if anyone wants to mail me a photo of themselves with their joker cards about to go in the mail, I will post it right here on the main page of the site.

I really don’t think we need to single out Heath Ledgr in this campaign. Everybody knows about his performace. He’s already being taken seriously. Hell, he’s the frontrunner.
If you notice from the photo of my cards that you posted, I didn’t specify any category with my ‘Jokerized’ writing. I simply put “For your consideration,” “hAhahaAhaHAHAahaHAhahaHA…,” and “And the Oscar goes to (Why So Serious? [burned]).”
If you want to put a category, how about putting “For your consideration IN ALL CATEGORIES.” TDK deserve more than a locked Supporting Actor nom and a push for a Best Picture nod. TDK deserves to be recognized for excellence in all areas. Pfister’s amazing images, including the incorporation of the IMAX technology is outstanding - above and beyond anything else produced by a camera in 2008. Bale, Eckhart, Oldman, Freeman, Roberts, etc. were all superb. Zimmer/Howard produced a subtle, yet perfect score. The art direction, costumes, make-up, etc. This movie is the reason why we have awards shows.

Great stunt and all, but why Variety? The paper’s been covering Dark Knight as a contender for top Oscars since the very beginning. At this point, the supporting race is Heath Ledger’s to lose, and as all the “serious” pedigree movies at the end of the year disappoint (I won’t name names, but show me one that’s measured up to the hype), Dark Knight looks poised to nab a Best Picture slot, too. So, uh, who are you trying to convince actually?
Personally, I feel as enthusiastic about Wall-E as you do about The Dark Knight (both make for unlikely underdogs, considering the glowing reviews, boffo box office and major studios behind each film). Just last week, the Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. voted the outstanding Pixar pic its best film of the year and chose Dark Knight as runner-up — a move that effectively validates Academy voters willing to consider a “cartoon” and a “comicbook movie” as being worthy of Best Picture.
There are precedents for both: Star Wars, Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Lord of the Rings and Beauty & the Beast were all nominated for Best Picture. As a film critic and features editor at Variety, I applaud your enthusiasm, especially since the Academy has had a nasty habit of overlooking those films the general public most cherishes during Oscar season, but I just want to remind you that Variety is on your side (we’re not picking favorites here, but we’re certainly giving The Dark Knight a fair shake).

Don’t you guys think we’re going a little overboard? TDK is getting overexposed as it is, we don’t need to shove it down people’s throat this hard. I think this might actually turn some voters off.
