DARK CAMPAIGN

A Dark Day for The Dark Knight

by Blair on Jan.22, 2009, under NEWS

Looks like I won’t be watching the Oscars this year.

Oscar Snubs: A Dark Day for Dark Knight

The Dark Knight, Christian Bale Warner Bros. Pictures

Maybe fans should have seen it coming: The Dark Knight, after all, does not have a happy ending.

The genre-busting Batman movie, a critical and popular favorite that earned more money in Hollywood history than all but one movie and, up until today’s Oscar nominations, spent award season being lauded as one of the Industry’s top films, was denied a shot at the prize of prizes: Best Picture.

Also turned away: Dark Knight filmmaker Christopher Nolan, shut out of the directing and writing categories.

The Dark Knight did earn eight overall nominations, including one for the late Heath Ledger, but it didn’t earn the respect that its studio and at least one grassroots fan campaign sought.

It’s been a fun ride but it’s too bad it ended like this. What a bizarre and strange result for the academy. To select a film like “The Reader” which wasn’t even able to crack a %60 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and most people didn’t even bother watching as a Best Picture nominee… Did not see that coming.

What are your thoughts out there?

    This is an absolute travesty!

  2. R W O

    Tragedy !
    The FrostFuckingNixon did it again.

THIS IS BULLSHIT!! I guess it will be another horrid ratings year for Oscars. Can’t believe that Titanic which isn’t then or now Oscar worthy gets 13 Noms, and TDK which is a better film gets the shit box. Good thing Heath is nominated, we all know he’s going to get it too! But what a shut out….a dark day indeed.

  4. Bluenuke12

It’s ridiculous how ignorant the Academy is of the public’s opinion. I’m sure the academy knew how special and monumental TDK was. My guess is that the only thing that held them back was their traditional, unchanging distaste toward superhero movies. But we all know TDK was more than that. As one critic said, this film “leaps beyond its origins.” This is a true pinnacle of film making that succeeds in every aspect: Directing, writing, acting, cinemotography, score, visual effects. A movie that can succeed in all this stuff deserves a Best Picture nod to me.

But the academy pussied out, and like always went with a film that’s “dramatic” and “intelligent” and that no one has heard of.

I’ve never felt this strongly about a movie before. TDK is a true model of film making and also of how far a movie genre can be taken. Thank You Christopher Nolan for all your hard work. Ignore the Academy. The public loves you and TDK. It will never be forgotten!!

    Fellow supporters,

I’m sure you’re as angry as I am that The Dark Knight had been so shamefully snubbed by the Oscars. But I urge you, don’t let it end here!

Everyone who believed that the Dark Knight should have got a best picture nomination (and there are droves of us worldwide) has a rare opportunity to make a difference with the re-release of the film in cinemas this month.

We must all register our disdain at this insult from the Academy by making this film’s cinema grossing smash all possible records just to spite them. Put away that dvd and go and watch the film in imax once, twice, nay three more times! You KNOW it’s that good!

Let us turn our anger into action!

  6. Tommy

    ABSOLUTE AND UTTER BULLSHIT!!!

The Academy has proven once again that it is irrelevant.

  7. C_Sozou

Ok everyone. We have to accept that this sucks. BUT. Look at the films that werent nominated but are now considered some of the greatest films ever. And even ones that were nominated that didn’t win that are considered way better than the ones that did.

    Fight Club, Taxi Driver, 2001…

Just wait a few years… the Academy will regret it.

  8. Shelby Avila

When I woke up this morning and checked /films to see the Oscar noms I couldn’t believe even after it’s amazing box office preformance and it being in my opinion(aswell as many many others) one of the best films of all time, the academy still couldn’t except that a superhero/comic adaption/blockbuster could be such an amazingly well made and beautiful film.

Today I have lost much respect the academy and the oscars.

I thank you here at DarkCampaign for your hard work, valor, courage, and relentless effort.

For without you we might not have been able to obtain the 8 noms the academy did grant us.

    Thank you.

    -Shelby A.

  9. Dakota

Taxi Driver was nominated, it just lost to Rocky.

Ehh, this is very ridiculous. But, like the article above said, we should have seen it coming. I just wish it wouldn’t have been Reader that completely robbed TDK (in pretty much every category) and something that is good. But, hey, it is a holocaust movie.

Fuck the holocaust, not only was it a scourge of human evil, but a scourge of cinematic appreciatory evil as well. Well, at least this just sets in stone that Slumdog will do a total sweep this year. At least that movie WAS great.

I think we should just turn this into a campaign to stop the viewing of the Oscars. I’m sure as hell not watching it, and I don’t think anyone who has posted here is either.

Stop Oscar Elitism! will be the driving mantra.

  10. Dakota

Nevermind to the Taxi Driver comment, I see you already pointed out it was just nominated.

  11. Blair

I’m going to start compiling a list of films that have more positive critical praise than “The Reader.”

Not kidding this includes “Zack & Miri Make a Porno,” “My Bloody Valentine 3D,” “Bolt,” “Kung Fu Panda” and hundreds of others from 2008 alone. In fact “The Reader” is actually %1 point from being ranked “Rotten” on RottenTomatoes.com. Great work Academy. You’ve really outdone yourself on this one.

  12. John Jackson

And your excuse is because it doesn’t have a happy ending….there have been hundreds of films with grim endings that have been nominated for the big awards at the Oscars, and quite a few that have won aswell, such as :

    1) No Country for Old Men
    2) Silence of The Lambs
    3) Godfather
    4) Godfather 2
    5) The Departed
    6) Crash
    7) Million Dollar Baby
    8) One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
    9) The Deer Hunter

And many more, they are just the winners too, a lot of grim films have been nominated. The reason your precious Dark Knight wasn’t is because it didn’t deserve it. It’s just an average comic book film (prob the best comic book film) but average none the less. So just deal with it you fanboys!!

  13. val

Yes TDK was robbed! It should have atleast got a Best Director nod ! :( anyway I`m glad we atleast got the Best Supporting Actor nod! You never know with this funny academy! 8 is still a good number!
So what if the Academy didn`t find it worthy? We love it and always will !!!!!!!
Thankyou for this amazing site and for all the support you guys showed towards the best film of 2008!

  14. BrideofJoker

John Jackson… the only person in the world outside the academy stupid enough to think The Reader was better than Dark Knight.

  15. The_Dystopian

This is it, then. The last speck of respectability that the Academy had is gone. It lost a lot in my book last year giving the top prize to ‘No Country for Sensible Endings’ over ‘There Will Be Blood’ or ‘Atonement’, but this is the final straw!

I would like to commend all of you at DarkCampaign.com for ultimately helping to expose the Academy Awards for the old-fashioned stuck-up farts that they are. As good as ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘The Reader’ may be, they do not match TDK. This will go down in cultural history as the greatest travesty since ‘Forrest Gump’ beat ‘Pulp Fiction’ and ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ to the Best Picture award.

Christopher Nolan will have his day, and when he does, I’ll cheer and jump with joy for him. For now, let us continue our protests and demand JUSTICE!!!

  16. The_Dystopian

John Jackson, there is a phrase in the common parlance to apply to you. It goes thus:

    Go fuck yourself.

    Regards,
    The Dystopian

  17. filmfemme

Bullshit. A travesty. A crime against forward-thinking movie lovers around the world.

What happened to meritocracy, or am I naive to think it ever existed in the first place?

Obviously Warners and Chris Nolan can’t be too pissed off, they still got paid and they know that they made a masterpiece. But this is just one more nail in the coffin of the Oscars, who have proved once and for all that they have no clue whatsoever about what truly great filmmaking is. If a film that grossed nearly $1 BILLION worldwide and got the reviews TDK did can’t get a BP or Best Director nod, then that’s proof that THEY’RE useless, not the film! Not to mention that “Titanic,” which was SKEWERED by critics when it came out, won Best Picture solely on the $$ it made!

Let the Oscar telecast boycott begin!

  18. John Jackson

    I LOVED DARK KNIGHT!!! I can’t believe it’s been snubbed. :(

  19. Nicholas

It’s so typical of the Oscars. Create a show that is designed to say FU to the public as far as what is Best Picture. Seriously, can the average person remember the last 2 - 3 years of Best Picture winners? Movies like The Godfather, Schindlers List, Silence of the Lambs, etc etc were popular films in the public and the critics and were rewarded with Oscars. Stop trying to be so elitist and “cool” by voting for movies that cater to you and the awards. TDK wasn’t trying to, that is why it is worthy. It took a genre that is mostly commercial and created something more, it elevated the genre. Recognize that!!!!!! Stupid Academy!! At least now I dont have to force myself to watch your silly show anymore.

  20. Nick

I SAY WE PETITION THEM TO RETRACT THE NOMINATION FOR THE READER AND GIVE THE DARK KNIGHT ITS DESERVED BEST PIC SPOT!

  21. John Jackson

    Nolan deserved best director!!!!!!

  22. BATMA17

Despite being a hardcore BATMAN fan, I wouldn’t have been surprised if The Dark Knight didn’t win the award, but Christopher Nolan and The Dark Knight should have definitely been nominated for Best Director, Screenplay, and Picture.

I, too, have lost respect for the Academy.

    c-ya:-)

    -j

  23. Nicholas

Thanks for giving a great effort though to get it nominated!!! My hats off to you.

  24. shaney

im calling for a boycott of the oscars whose with me

  25. ManWhoLaughs83

Shame on the Academy for putting the critical flop, “The Reader,” in the Best Picture and Best Director categories over “The Dark Knight.” There’s no excuse for it. No one will remember “The Reader” this time next year while “The Dark Knight” will live on for decades. The Academy had an opportunity here to prove that perhaps they weren’t so out of touch after all, but failed miserably.

TDK is still just as great of a film today as it has always been. We know this, which is why the snubs delivered today say a lot more about the Academy than they do about “The Dark Knight.”

A big “Thank you!” to all the folks who ran this site and this campaign. You did all you could and this failure is not yours, but the Academy’s.

  26. Danny

Like many have said, I too have lost my respect for the Academy. There will not be an epic film such as TDK in YEARS.

(With the concept of all the money it took in, all the records it broke, etc.)

No Best Picture nod? Why the fuck not? Just cause it’s a comic book film? Isn’t the Academy clever enough to understand that this film goes way beyond that??

WOW! No Best Director, Screenplay, and No Best Score either?? What a Joke. We all here know just how perfect this film was. The directing, writing, the performance, the music, everything was top notch.

Fuck the Academy. Action is required indeed. We all have to unite and make TDK break the 1 billion mark.

I say we should also mail in more Joker Cards. At least Heath is going to get the award he deserves.

  27. Krystal

Very disappointing & depressing that The Dark Knight did not get nominated for Best Picture, Director & Musical Score. At least it received 8 other nominations. Will definitely NOT be watching the Oscars this year in PROTEST!! :-(

I don’t care what the Academy says: the real Best Picture of 2008 is THE DARK KNIGHT.

  28. Eric

I wonder what more people will have viewed in the end…The Oscars or the City Council Debate on zoning laws you find on community television? My money is on the zoning laws–more interesting and applicable to our lives anyway.

What a heaping pantload of crap that The Dark Knight was robbed of this.

I’m currently writing a movie that is guaranteed to get more Oscar nominations than people who have cumulatively watched it. It is called “Everlasting.” It will star Sean Penn and Ralph Fiennes and be directed by Stephen Daldry (I’m looking at you “The Reader”). It will be about two gay Jewish lovers imprisoned in Auschwitz during the holocaust and their timeless tale of love. That includes every movie formula the academy loves. The academy will be so excited about the prospects of the movie that they will cancel the Oscars ceremony and just give every Oscar to that movie. Sean Penn + Ralph Fiennes + Stephen Daldry + Holocaust Movie + Gay Lovers = Academy Premature Ejaculation

Also, I’m actually very liberal so please don’t think I am a homophobe.

  29. Anonymous

    Boycott.
    protest.
picket outside the Kodak theater with signs: “Why so serious?”

  30. Nishiio

    I am…SO disappointed.

Quoting someone from IMDB: “The Academy really @#$%ed itself this year…it’s gonna lose half its viewers.”

Whatever. I don’t need a bunch of old douchebags telling me what movies are good or not. We all know The Dark Knight is one of the best achievements in movies to date!

  31. Helsing

Oh, why, why, why so idiot, Mr. Oscar?!
The Dark Knight is the best, but you know, its “just a comic book movie”
    Bullshit, it’s a masterpiece!

  32. Rayne

    My Fellow Clowns,

We fought the good fight. I have it on good authority that Warner Brothers, and the Academy have taken notice to our efforts, and that the Warner studio does in fact appreciate the effort we made. The film is a masterpiece, and the Joker was maniacle. But that does not mean we have to be Maniacle ourselves. Pickett signs with “Why So Serious” while wearing Joker Make-Up is a nice gesture on our part, and I will support any who does it, however, Keep in mind, that we are the good guys here. This Picture is without a shadow of a doubt the best movie in over a decade. To get stupid will only ruin it’s Good Name.

Heath is going to have his glory on February 22nd, and we did get 8 Nominations. Just think what the DVD’s, and Blu-Rays will look like with the header saying “Nominated for 8 Academy Awards: Including Best Supporting Actor Heath Ledger” That is where the Honor will come in. Whether we care to admit it or not, this film ended up being a theatrical celebration for Heath, and from here on in, let’s focus on that. When they Announce Heath as the winner, I will have a glass of Wine ready, in hand to toast him.

To the Academy I say only this: Do you wanna know how we got these O-scars??? NO? Then Why So Serious? We are an immovable object, get used to it!

  33. Nick

Ricky Gervais Said at the golden globes “keep doing holocaust movies they bring in the awards” well once again we see a holocaust movie being treated as more than a film. I say that we the fans do more than just sit by and let this happen, we need action, we need to do something, i propose we do what the batman would do. We fight this unjust action with what ever we can use. Spread the wrod, send emails fight the powers of the cineart academy and show it for what it is. Small films are crap, the biggest film of the decade needs to be recognized

  34. Superhero Live!

Why I think DK’s best picture snub is a GOOD THING for comic book movies in the long run

Thank you for a great run Dark Campaign. But please don’t picket (too bitter). Rather, keep up the pressure on behalf of Heath. He’s not a shoe-in and needs all the help he can get.

  35. WillyJoel

Anyways, yes, the Academy fucked up, but hey, we all know that The Dark Knight is the best movie of the year, we won’t be watching (maybe only when they give the Oscar to Heath and Chris comes up to accept it in his name) but look at it this way: Perhaps, this will motivate Chris and Jonah to write and magnificent third movie that could do the impossible, surpass the masterpiece that was The Dark Knight, can you guys imagine it? the third Batman movie better than The Dark Knight? maybe then the Academy can correct itself and reward the talent that are the Nolan brothers.

  36. Aleš

So pissed, better to say nothing more!!

  37. carl-IMPORTANT MESSAGE

The Dark Knight was a good film, not a good Batman film. It is as simple as that. It is quite sad that audiences believe that this is the best the filmmakers can do with the character and franchise. I am the biggest Batfan on planet earth as far as i know, and i love the character and the comic books. Nolan completely disregarded the source material and made it something entirely different. As both a Batman fan and film fan, i can honestly say Nolan took this universe in his own direction, and contradicted himself by stating he wanted to make a “realistic” Batman film. It can’t be done. That’s why he should have embraced the fantasy of the comic book world to make a better movie. I liked the movie a lot, and it is by far the best Batman film yet, but that isn’t saying much if you compare it to the awful Burton/Schumacher films. Any fans, please re-assess this movie. It is not the best film of the year or the decade or ever by any stretch. This is coming from a true Batman fan. The movie contradicted itself, had unnecessary subplots that didn’t contribute to anything, and was heroic in no way. The film portrayed Batman in a light that did nothing for the character. The filmmakers said THEY WOULD NOT overshadow Batman’s character and keep him the central force. But they did exactley what i expected them to do and water down the character in favor of another character. The film should have been called Heath Ledger’s Joker. Ledger was an amazing talent and was taken from this world far too soon. It was definately a blow to the movie industry. He would have gone on to bigger and better things. But his portrayal wasn’t the movie’s best acting. I believe gary oldman’s Commissioner Gordon was truly the shining light of the movie. He was Gordon. It bothers me that Heath’s performance overshadows everyone else’s in the film, especialy Oldman’s. The acting and casting was superb, the best part of the movie. But it is much more difficult to portray a determined cop and family man than it is to portray a random psychopath. That is why i believe Oldman deserves the crical lauding above everthing else the movie gave us. Hopefully my message is heard, and people understand that this was just a quick thrill, not a lasting masterpiece it could have been. In the future, i believe Batman will get the proper screen adaptation he deserves and not be overshadowed by his villians. Thank You.

  39. Joe

What can i say fellow dark knight fans? I think we shoulda seen this coming. In retrospect, I almost feel silly thinking and hoping that the dark knight could actually make the top five at the oscars (i made early predictions that it would WIN!). After all, the Reader is a blatant, oscar-baiting snob fest… a holocaust movie with brittish actors (a deadly combo), and last but not least, it was produced by two famous and beloved dead guys. In hollywood, not even batman can beat that. For those of you who are as severely dissapointed as i am, take this to heart… the Academy is nothing but a self rewarding hollywood machine, and WE are the true lovers of movies…the FANS. Some might insultingly refer to us as “fanboys,” but that doesn’t do us justice. We are the ones who truly propel this industry, that not only spend our hard earned money and take the time to see great films, but SUPPORT them as well. I mean, just look at this site, it’s ridiculous, but it’s ridiculous in a good way. We all have a PASSION and AFFECTION for this film. Efforts like this should not go unrewarded, but all to often in the real world, they do. So, if you feel the need to boycott the oscars, to make demonstrations at the Kodak theater, or to simply rant and rage online like myself and many others, by all means, do so. Because with that passion and anger, we will demonstrate what we think is the best film of the year. we dont need an elitist group like the academy of motion picture arts and television to tell us where our passions lie. 6,000 some odd snobs doesnt compare to the vast majority of moviegoers. The people have spoken, and they have chosen the dark knight as the best picture of the year. As for me, i will in fact watch the oscars, if only to see heath win the prize and receive the standing ovation he so rightfully deserves for his final completed performance. And as for the rest of you, if you truly love this film, go see it again on the big screen where it belongs, after all, you may not have another chance. Let us support The Dark Knight’s mission to pass $1 billion globally. And for those who have lost faith in the the Academy, let me say this: Christopher Nolan is a master of his craft, and if anyone can make a sequel greater than the Dark Knight, its our boy Chris. Here’s to hoping that “The Dark Knight Returns” will blow us all away, and that the Academy can right this wrong and reward a great filmmaker, and hopefully, a great movie too.

  40. Ananda

I really liked that ray of hope you thrown at us, Joe: “Here’s to hoping that “The Dark Knight Returns” will blow us all away, and that the Academy can right this wrong and reward a great filmmaker, and hopefully, a great movie too.”

Anyway I’d suggest we all watch the Oscars via internet so they have the lowest TV ratings is history. Or al least just watch them at the supporting actor cathegory, so they can notice there’s something very wrong in forgetting TDK.

Make a riot outside the Kodak Theatre and watch TDk on the big screen a couple of more times.

It’s been a very hard day for me today, I’m really blue and dissapointed right now guys. But this movie will always be be one of my favourites and it will be remembered as the best of 2008 and THE movie of 2008 for years to come.

I can´t believe…I was really sad today when I saw the news. But this mistake won´t change what I feel for TDK. The academy can´t convince me that their nominees are better than TDK.
This will probably be one of the worst oscars of all times. And what about “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”? I´m sorry, but are they crazy? What does this movie adds to the history of cinema? And they give it 13 nominations!!
I decide what is best for me and that´s how we all must act. I can´t say that I won´t watch the oscar, but I´m thinking seriously of watching only the award for Heath Ledger. This is an obligation for the academy!!
But I´m starting to feel happy again. Because I realized clearly that the academy award is not a seal of quality for a movie…it´s just business, and politics and private interests.
It is an award that has no value for me anymore. Too many injustices along the years (The Pianist, The Shawshank Redemption, There Will Be Blood, 2001, and more and more…)
TDK: the best movie of 2008 and one of the best of all times!! We will never forget it!!

  44. Connor Norris (The Shocked Man)

    How!? Why!? No!

    Batman? Batman!? BATMAN!?!?!?

This doesn’t make any sense. How could they? Fools. I agree with Shelby. The Academy has lost my respect. I will not watch it. I already know Heath Ledger will win for sure, but that is the only draw to it. And Gran Torino too!? You’ve got to be kidding…

HELP!!!! This is an outrage and I want YOUR help in the boycott of the Oscars! I have a radio show that is syndicated on 322 stations and I would like to get interviews for an upcoming show about this - you can check out http://www.nightwatchradio.com,. http://www.nightwatchuniverse.com and http://www.theclownlaughs.com for more info on the show. I have had Jett from Batman on Film on a few times and I am just so upset over this insanity. Lets get a new show together with the creators of this website, Jett and any of you that want to write. It’s time to fight back!

  49. Juan C

Man, i’m so sad and with a lot of anger after this savage to cinema. No Best Picture nomination for Dark Knight? what a crappy Oscar standards. As the one before me wrote, yeah let’s boycott! they must learn in the hard way then. The people that lives close or near the Kodak center should protest and people in other places avoid of watching The Oscars.

  50. Nicholas

Superhero Live is right, Let’s make sure Heath gets what he deserves….even if he would probably hate going to the awards show to get it. I say every TDK nomination needs our support but never let the Academy forget who truly rules Hollywood: The studios, NO., The actors, NO, all the way down the line, NO. It is the viewing public. If we didnt like movies or purchase any of the products of the films, they would all be asking us if we want fries with that. We RULE what is good, not them. Mr. Nolan and all involved: thank you. From hardcore Batfans such as myself to movie lovers all over, we thank you for making something beyond great.

  51. Rayne

Nicely said there Nicholas. I would just like to add to what was said above. Let’s focus on the nominations that this film has now earned. And I would like to spread some cheerful thought if I may:

I believe without a shadow of a doubt, that Heath is looking down on us right now with tears in his eyes, while his soul is bursting with pride. I am sure that he never dreamed of the love people are pouring out not just for him, but for the role he gave of himself into. My friends, he still knows he has the most loyal fanbase. And he loves you all tremendously. He did this role knowing full well that you all would welcome him as The Joker. Let us Celebrate him one last time as he wins the Oscar this year. As Chris Nolan accepts the Award on his behalf, and the crowd cheers his name, let us stand as well, lift a glass of wine and toast him in his honor By placing our hand on our hearts and saying a final prayer.

This is what I believe people. This is what we should do to make this campaign go out with a bang! Let’s go out in style, Let’s go out with class. Let’s look Oscar right in the eye and say “Hey! Why so Serious you ass!!!”

ALL THE OTHER ONES WERE MADE BY BIG STUDIOS JUST TO TRY AND MANIPULATE THE ACADEMY .

SLUMDOG CAN DO WHAT THE DARK KNIGHT COULD NOT.

BREAK EVERY ACADEMY RULE AND WIN.

THAT WOULD BE A SLAP IN THE FACE OF HARVEY WEINSTEIN WHO IS NOW TRYING TO WIN BEST PICTURE FOR THE READER.

WE ALL MUST PROTEST AGAINST THIS.

THE READER MUST NOT WIN THE BEST PICTURE OSCAR.

IT WOULD BE THE ULTIMATE INSULT FOR ALL BATMAN FANS.

THE ONLY PEOPLE I WILL SUPPORT ON THE AWARDS NIGHT ARE THE GREAT HEATH LEDGER AND THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE
WHO TRIED SO HARD AND GOT SLUMDOG MADE WITH VERY LESS MONEY.

i wrote a long article on how the Academy is so out of touch with the fans. Comparing it to the BCS even. http://www.eisentower30.com

  56. Krystal

Brandon Gray of Box Office Mojo wrote an excellent article on Jan.26/09 referencing the Oscars & DK at http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=2540&p=.htm

“Meanwhile, a picture that didn’t need the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to help get the word out but that the Academy may have needed in the Best Picture race to boost the sagging ratings of its telecast, The Dark Knight, had a modest re-launch at 350 venues and generated $667,397, slightly augmenting its phenomenal run that stands at $531.7 million in 192 days. The Academy claims that the Oscars are “The biggest movie event of the year,” yet The Dark Knight, an actual movie that people had to leave their houses for and pay to see, sold more tickets than the typical viewership of the Oscar telecast.”

Ha! I especially like the last part about DK selling more tickets than the average viewership of the Oscars. :)

  57. vampyra

Yes we all enjoyed The Dark Knight and think fondly of it and believe that it is the best film of 2008. Even if the Academy thinks the film is not worthy of Best Picture we the cinema goers know that it is. And no one can say that Heath Ledger does not deserve an Oscar he performance was miraculous! I have said it before and I will say it again he was robbed of an Oscar for Brokeback Mountain. A truly beautiful heartbreaking performance. As for TDK it has broken box office records and will continue to make money with DVD and Blue-ray sales. How many people will see The Reader? or buy the DVD? How long before this film is forgotten? The will never happen to TDK it will be seen and discussed by movie goers for a very long time.

Yes, the Dark Knight should have been nominated, it is good that Ledger got recognized. But when the ratings for the Oscars are lower than last years, will anyone in Hollywood really wonder why?

The Dark Knight was by far the best film of the year. Was it a “political” decision not to dominate it?
