While Warner Bros. seems more interested in securing Clint Eastwood’s much-deserved Oscar for Best Original Song, a legion of online Batfans have launched Dark Campaign, their own “unofficial grassroots effort to support The Dark Knight for the 2008 Academy Awards.” Laugh all you want, but Revolutionary Road doesn’t have one of those!
Past 24 hours of press for the Dark Campaign. Here’s some of the media outlets who picked up our story so far…
by Blair on Dec.03, 2008, under NEWS
First up this morning we have New York Magazine running this piece about us:
Continues here. For the record, I actually had the pleasure of screening Milk at the Castro Theatre where much of the film takes place, and it’s a terrific film.
Then we have this article over here at one of my favorite snarky Gawker blogs… Defamer:
Fans Pick Up Oscar Slack as Warner Bros. Kills ‘Dark Knight’ Re-Release
The Dark Knight isn’t making the Oscar impression many thought it would by this point in the year, which may be why Warner Bros. reportedly confirmed today that it spiked its planned IMAX re-release for next month. And in any case, it’s definitely why the mouthbreathing legions of Bat-supporters have gone guerrilla for their hero’s awards-season sake.
For the record I think Warner Bros is in fact still planning on re-releasing Dark Knight in January, but every other statement in that article is accurate including the fact that we all breathe through our mouths.
FilmSchoolRejects weighed in with this article saying:
A few very resourceful fans have started up a movement of sorts in support of the film’s Oscar campaign. They are calling it The Dark Campaign, and they’ve created the above video to help support their cause. In addition to the video, they have also created a Facebook Group and a blog over at DarkCampaign.com. While it is unlikely to help, as I seriously doubt Academy Voters are trolling the web for fan-made considerations sites, we have to applaud them for the effort — they do love The Dark Knight.
And over at JoBlo we’ve got this story:
THE DARK KNIGHT FOR BEST PICTURE?
12/3/08 - For some people (myself included) nothing would be sweeter, than watching Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas walk up to the podium come Oscar-time and accept the venerable trophy for Best Picture for THE DAR KNIGHT. Many say it can’t be done–either because it is undeserved, or because a true masterpiece will never trump the steel clutch of tradition. That tradition being the notion that the esteemed members of the Academy would refuse to acknowledge a summer blockbuster–based on a comic book no less–as something more than an exercise in explosions and one-liners. When clearly, all who saw the film, recognize it as something much greater.
The forward thinking folks at DarkCampaign.com have taken it upon themselves to make sure that this film is not ignored come voting time and have created a superb website and accompanying video to remind voters and the public alike, how truly profound and all-encompassing this film really is. Kudos guys, kudos.
Awards Daily has this nice write-up on our effort:
The Dark Campaign - All Hail one of the Best of 2008
2 Dec
The Dark Knight is still, as far as I can see, one of the best films of the year. A thrill from frame to frame, delivering the perfect triad of acting, directing and writing - it’s going to be tough to bear if it is ignored by the Academy. At any rate, here is the site Dark Campaign, that is designed to draw attention to the film’s Oscar prospects. And sorry, AMPAS, the score is one of the year’s best too. Just because it appeals to young people doesn’t make it not Oscar-worthy.
Then we’ve got this story “Dark Campaign from Jeffery Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere which pretty much just copies and pastes our site (which is fine heh).
Oscar coverage site InContention ran this story on us saying:
Grassroots ‘Dark Knight’ campaign
Posted by Kristopher Tapley · 12:00 pm · December 2nd, 2008
One of the true joys for me this season has been watching Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” take on so much relevance and achieve such a higher state of purpose than a piece of entertainment. Leaving awards aside for the moment, to see this character I’ve loved for so many years finally reach a sort of pinnacle, it is both beautiful and a bit of testimony, testimony to the potential a “throw-away” genre such as this holds, potential recognized in the geek culture for decades, making its way to the surface of traditional media through dedicated and restless souls in recent times…finally.
This grassroots campaign for the film gets all of that and more. The site, DarkCampaign.com, sports a sleek design that invites the casual Internet reader to dive back in and remember that this is still one of the most powerful films of the year. The site features a five-minute video (embedded below), splashing many of the critical huzzahs across the canvas of the film. These guys must have gotten hold of a guild screener or something because there are a lot of scenes utilized that you certainly never saw on a trailer.
This is all the more interesting to me right now given that as of this afternoon, I have buckled and placed “The Dark Knight” into my predicted five Best Picture nominees. With films falling out left and right, this one is still standing and still resonates.
Cinematically Correct sez:
These Guys Are Taking “The Dark Knight” Oscar Campaign To New Heights
Posted by Cinematically-Correct on December 2, 2008
Cinematically Correct doesn’t need to be sold on this idea: “The Dark Knight” deserves a Best Picture nomination. The only movie that I’ve seen this year that competes with it so far this year has been “The Wrestler” and maybe “Milk”. Unfortunately, “The Dark Knight” isn’t held in the same regard as movies like those because it’s a “comic book movie”.
Well, the folks at Dark Campaign don’t think so. Their website is dedicated to getting “The Dark Knight” an Oscar win for Best Picture. Here is a slick little promotional piece they put together. Actually, if this doesn’t get you amped up for the DVD/BluRay release next Tuesday, nothing will.
This article at JustPressPlay.net says:
Warner Bros may have been pushing for The Dark Knight’s Oscar nomination in their own way, but there’s another group aggressively pushing for the film to get some Oscar recognition: the fans.
The site DarkCampaign.com is an attempt to show fan support for the film and lobby for Academy voters to give the film their consideration. They’ve edited a 4-minute long video to showcase why they believe The Dark Knight is indeed the best film of 2008.
We’ve made a pretty big splash so far in the past 24 hours. More to come so check-in later today. Thanks to all of you supporters out there who’ve reached out and gotten our campaign to sites and media outlets so far. Great job.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that the DK will still be rereleased and that IMAX should be making the official announcement soo.
December 3rd, 2008 on 12:33 pm
I’m going to say this right now.
There are a number of valid reasons on why we should push hard for TDK to be nominated for at least the two major categories with Best Picture and Best Director.
This is a just cause and it would push the negative biased opinions about comic based genre films away. If films like Gladiator, The Departed, and Lord of the Rings can be nominated and recognized, then TDK certainly deserves the same recognition.
TDK is easily the best comic genre film off all time and it is DEFINITELY one of the top 5 overall films of 2008. This masterpiece of Chris Nolans is much more than just a comic genre based film….without a doubt. It had it all!
The quality of the movie, its’ direction, the production, the acting, along with it’s critical and of course huge box office success speak for themselves! If TDK does not get nominated in the Best Picture and Best Director categories, then the Academy will prove that it has a serious problem.

This website is great. BOF posted it and I’m glad he did. There needs to be as much support and ‘noise’ from the fans as possible.

This site is amazing! It does my heart so good to see fans uniting like this. This movie was a milestone in my life, I was born into being a BATMAN fan, and this EPIC film brought true respect and actual THOUGHT to these characters that are so near and dear to my heart.
This site just pushes us and reminds us just why BATMAN is one of the greatest most complex characters in all of literature.
It would truly be an honor that all true fans would love to share with eachother and with Mr. Nolan and company.
Im rooting for my BATMAN.
Im glad others are too.
